Apple TVs are a hot tech commodity in elementary and secondary schools alike. The problem, at $99 a piece plus installation, the costs add up! Don’t fret, there are other options, Air Server and Reflector. Both of these options will mirror multiple devices to your PC or MAC simultaneously and are a low cost alternative to Apple TV.
The first option is Air Server which functions much like the Apple TV mirroring function; here is a nice comparison http://www.airserver.com/Compare. Air Server runs $11.99 for teachers/students using three computers or less or just $3.99 a user for for schools, universities and businesses needing 20 or more licenses. The best part, it never expires!!! The one downside to Air Server is that your computer must have Windows Vista, 7, or 8 to install and run the program on your PC or Snow Leopard or newer on your MAC. Compatible devices include iPad 2 or newer, iPad mini, iPod Touch 5+, iPhone 4S or newer, and Mountain Lion. Alternatively, you can use an Android device running doubleTwist+AirTwist. Finally your device and your computer must be connected to the same network. You can start your free seven day by accessing the download here http://www.airserver.com/Download.
The second option is Air Squirrel’s Reflector. Reflector also allows users to mirror multiple Apple devices including the iPad 2 or newer, iPad mini, iPhone 4S or newer, and the iPod touch (5th generation). Reflector is the better option for most of our teachers because it will run from a PC with Windows XP or newer. Reflector runs $12.99 for an individual user, $10.99 each for five or more users, and $10.00 each for twenty or more users. Your device and your computer must be connected to the same network. You can download a trial of Reflector at https://store.airsquirrels.com/. Reflector’s trial will allow you to mirror in ten minute increments after you complete the download.
